Coos County and House District 9 will be a primary battle ground in the 2018 election and we need every volunteer to help put a Republican in the Governor’s Office and change the makeup of the Legislature.

I also received some great news this week regarding my campaign that I’d love to share with you.  See you there.

Resolution Opposing the Passage of the Coos Bay School District #9 Bond Measure 6-166

Bond Measure 6-166 is a near duplication of the recently defeated Bond #6-163 in May of 2017. The Coos Bay School District, despite voter rejection is again making a push for the ballot box.

They are recklessly using taxpayer money once again, by placing this back on the ballot in the special election scheduled for the 7th of November 2017, just some 5 months removed from its original defeat. Listed below are the facts.

  1. This tax will force hardship on our seniors. If property taxes rise on a fixed income resident, it will create a financial hardship that will undoubtedly put an economic strain on our valued seniors.
  2. This tax will affect all renters as well, as these costs will be passed on via increased rent.
  3. A huge tax like this affects the price of all goods and services sold in the community. Businesses will likely pass on the increased cost of those products to the customers.
  4. The most harmful part of this tax burden is that it puts the most vulnerable people in our community at severe risk of financial instability.
  5. All the residents of the District are required by circumstance to live with their means, and the Coos Bay School District needs to do the same.
  6. Bond Measure #6-166 represents a scenario as some have painted where grandma is pushed over a cliff in her wheelchair, by uncaring parties, and it is a shameful disgrace.

A Resolution was passed unanimously at the regular Central Committee meeting on May 27th of 2017 opposing the previous school bond measure #6-163. It was a noble and successful effort to protect the most vulnerable members of our community and the hard-working people who live within the district.

Now for the second time, the Executive Board of the Coos County Republican Party has reaffirmed this same Resolution for the same reasons opposing School District Bond Measure #6-166.

House Democrats adopt $667 million tax hike that will hit smallest of Oregon small businesses
Measure adopted with less than supermajority needed for revenue raising measures

Salem, Ore. - House Democrats today passed a $667 million tax increase that will be exclusively leveled on Oregon small businesses with fewer than 10 employees and those in certain industries. Proponents of the measure, relying on a controversial and yet-to-be court-tested legal theory, passed the tax increase without the supermajority support required by the Oregon Constitution to pass revenue raising bills. Several Democrats crossed party lines to join Republicans in opposing the bill.

“The Oregon Constitution is clear, a bill for raising revenue must pass each chamber of the Legislature with at least a supermajority of the membership voting yes,” said House Republican Leader Mike McLane (R-Powell Butte). “I find it deeply disturbing that House Democrats are willing to violate the letter and the spirit of the Constitution to raise $667 million in new taxes over the next six years on the backs of the smallest of Oregon small businesses. I challenge anyone who suggests HB 2060 A is not a tax increase to go talk to the employers who will see their tax bills dramatically increase if this bill is signed into law.”

HB 2060 A raises $667 million in new taxes over the next six years by increasing the tax rate paid by thousands of Oregon small businesses. Those small businesses currently pay a lower rate, which was approved by legislative leaders during the 2013 Special Session as part of the “Grand Bargain.” Legislative leaders agreed to the rate as part of a package of bills that included a tax increase for C-corporations, modifications to the senior medical deduction, GMO crop regulations and pension reforms. Though the pension reforms were eventually overturned by the Oregon Supreme Court, the other elements of the Grand Bargain have remained in place. The same four legislative leaders who negotiated the 2013 Grand Bargain are still in leadership positions today.

“The 2013 Grand Bargain showed that Republican and Democratic leaders could come together to solve difficult problems. The deal required all sides to make sacrifices, but we were willing to share that burden because we believed it was the right thing to do for the people of Oregon,” continued Rep. McLane. “HB 2060 A represents a stark betrayal of our work in 2013. Not only does it rollback a key element of the Grand Bargain, but it was also brought forward just this week and to the surprise of those who would be impacted the most by its passage.”

The $667 million tax hike comes just days after House Democrats passed a 1.5% tax on health insurance premiums, which will be paid by many of the same small businesses that would see their taxes increase under HB 2060 A.

“Oregonians want to see real, meaningful revenue and spending reform from their state government,” said Representative Mark Johnson (R-Hood River). “But HB 2060 A represents neither. It is nothing more than a desperate cash grab on the backs of the smallest of Oregon small businesses. This bill betrays months of bipartisan efforts to develop a long-term plan for providing budget stability.”

HB 2060 A passed the House on a 31-28 vote, with three Democrats joining Republicans in opposing the bill. The bill now heads to the Senate, where its fate is uncertain.

Oregon Republicans Question Financial Source of Gov "Trump Resistance Team"

Oregon GOP Chair Questions Gov. Brown Anti-Trump Group, Source of Financing Asks if Kate Brown really thinks Oregon voters elected her Governor to play political games?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: ORP Communications Director

Wilsonville, OR – Oregon Republican Party Chairman Bill Currier issued a statement on Wednesday in response to media reports that Oregon Governor Kate Brown had formed a “Trump Resistance Team”.  Currier said that Brown’s “social action team” threatens to further divide our nation, and suggested that the Governor prefers playing political games instead of devoting herself to solving pressing problems here in Oregon.  Currier also raised questions about the motivation and funding of Brown’s new campaign.

“This kind of rhetoric by a sitting Oregon Governor is inflammatory, divisive, and unprecedented.   We have enough problems coming together in America without elected officials wasting time fanning the flames. The voters have spoken, and public opinion polls show general approval of President Trump’s actions so far.  Governor Brown risks being left on the fringes of our society, instead of being considered a bipartisan thought leader.  With mounting long term debt, state spending ballooning out of control, transparency and corruption issues, pressing transportation needs, and economic development challenges, does Kate Brown really think Oregon voters elected her Governor to play political games?”

"You also have to wonder about the origin and funding of this campaign," cautioned Chair Currier.  “We’ve seen many recent examples of Governor Brown’s public policies and political motives being shaped and funded, in whole or in part, by out of state billionaires like Michael Bloomberg, Tom Steyer, and George Soros - along with in-state billionaire Win McCormack. It’s high time Oregon voters reject the extremist agenda of these hyper-rich cronies and leave the governing of Oregon to Oregonians.”

"I have to remark at the irony of this report," added Currier. "Kate’s email to supporters reads, in part, ‘Now, more than ever, we must bring communities together to resist in a divided nation.’ Yet this call to action urges her progressive activist supporters to come together to divide people.  Not exactly a “uniting” approach.  Past elected officials have always tried to find a way to work with a President of the opposite party, even up through President Obama’s administration.  It’s time for Democrat Leaders to stop whining, get to work, and find areas of common ground with President Trump, to accomplish the important business of our state and nation."

Currier also took note of the hashtag games being played, saying, “The #teamkate hashtag is interesting, if a bit short sighted.  A quick twitter search by a social media professional - or even an amateur - would have revealed that it has already been taken.  Let’s hope Governor Brown does nothing more to revive the other hashtag she was known for - #korruptkate.”

Subject: Anti-Republican Vandalism at Old Cedartree in Florence

This morning, Labor Day, 2016, Duke and Trish Wells, owners of Old Cedartree Woodworking came to work to find yet another work of vandalism against their support of Donald Trump.  This time, instead of just throwing their Trump signs in the street and driving over them,(see picture) a slingshot was used to break the window holding the large Trump sign.  This large, bay window in the front of the store has been in their shop, with its matching windows for 30 years.  The hole is in the upper left and the entire window will have to be replaced.

Duke and Trish have offered their shop as a place to pick up Republican campaign signs and a place for patriotic rallies for the last many years.  We need to support them by funding the replacement of the window.  They feel this is violent intolerance encouraged by democrats and they will not stop supporting the candidates they feel can help get our country back.

As a fellow Republican, grateful for Duke and Trish's courage and patriotism, I urge you to support them in this effort. Stop by their shop and put some cash in their "Repair the Window" donation bucket or click on https://www.gofundme.com/oldcedartree .  Pick up some more signs and stickers while you're there.  We really need to get people out to vote to win this election.
