LTE ~ Should We Be Worried Dealing with Veresen and the LNG

Letter for the editor’s mailbag

The front page above the fold article of 4 March understates the concerns of people who are for and against the LNG import - now export - terminal at North Bend.

Regarding eminent domain; most of us agree that Amendment VI of the US constitution states, in part, “nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation”.  Most of us agree that government bodies, and occasionally pipeline companies, have the power to take privately owned land subject to reasonable compensation.  But, how does the public benefit by enabling a relatively small Canadian company to seize private Oregon lands so a few Canadians may make billions of dollars?  It is not intended that the lands to be seized for pipeline use will in any way convert to “public use”.

Regarding that planned 36 inch diameter pipeline, think of a tube full of flammable natural gas that is 12” by 12” by 12” (one square foot) with a relatively low auto ignition temperature.  Now multiply that tube of gas by 1,550,000,000 (as in billion) and that’s the maximum that the applicant has stated will be flowing by about 230 miles of properties en route to North Bend every day 24/7.  That gas will be traveling at about 1,400 psi.  It’s not the 230 mile long 75 foot wide path that the pipeline man says he needs; it’s the quarter mile wide danger zone that you don’t want to be near.  So, with the support of the friendly government bodies, the pipeline man will seize your property, pay what he considers to be a fair price for a 75 foot wide path, and you can’t use a quarter mile wide footprint on your land.  Feel safe, secure or stupid?

And last, we should be concerned about who we will be dealing with here.  Veresen, the couple hundred people strong Canadian company seeking pipeline and LNG export terminal permits does not have the human or fiscal resources to undertake such a terminal and pipeline effort.  In all likelihood they will sell out soon after permits are received.  Will we be doing business with the Dutch of Shell; the Chinese; the Russians; who knows?  The politicians of our community have had ten years to negotiate legally enforceable agreements with Veresen, including novation agreements – if needed.  Why have they not done so?

Ms. DeMocker and her friends have every reason for concern - and then some.
