The Senate passed the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). It expands the President's powers to
kidnap you.
This criminal piece of legislation passed 98-0, with Sens. Kirk and Rockefeller not voting.
That's right, 98-0. Only twice in the last half-century has the Defense Authorization been unanimous.
If ever there was a vote where a Senator could express his principled opposition, this was it. It's not as if the caucus needed their vote.
Yet not one took advantage.
The bill is now in Conference Committee to be reconciled with a House version. A final vote in both chambers will quickly follow.
Please protest. Deny your consent.
That's why I wrote this letter using DownsizeDC.org's Indefinite Detention campaign...
I'm angry that you didn't repeal the detainee provisions of the 2012 NDAA. Worse, the Feinstein Amendment in the 2013 NDAA appears to EXPAND these illegal kidnapping powers. http://tinyurl.com/d72qs89
This criminal piece of legislation also...
* Punishes the innocent citizens of Iran by expanding the sanctions against that country (which is no serious threat to us).
* Expands so-called "counter-terrorism" operations (illegal drone wars) and foreign aid in the Third World. These policies CREATE enemies.
And it spends $650 billion -- SIX TIMES the amount China spends on Defense.
You couldn't find ANY substantial cuts? Seriously?
Does it really make sense for us to continue borrowing from China so we can station troops in wealthy countries like Japan and Germany? Seriously?
Those who voted for this bill demonstrated . . .
* Contempt for civil liberties and the Constitution
* Support for illegal wars
* A love of Pentagon pork
* A distaste for fiscal prudence
I deny my consent for you to "govern me" this way.
I'll be watching your vote on the final version of NDAA. Get it right next time. Vote no.
