In 1933, Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels decided to bring professional and cultural organizations in line with Nazi ideology—meaning getting rid of any messages that disagreed with the regime. He convinced the
Student Associations and universities to join in and on May 10, 1933, the university students burned more than 25,000 volumes of “un-German” books. These included so-called “corrupting foreign influences” by American authors Ernest
Hemmingway, Jack London, and Helen Keller.
This week on the I Spy Radio Show, we’re talking about dissent. Not Nazi Germany, but Oregon State University. We interview Dr. Nick Drapela, whose contract wasn’t renewed, he believes, because of his views on global warming, which run contrary to the “party line” at OSU.
